Univision's "Premios Juventud" (Youth Awards)
celebrated its tenth birthday tonight with a party in the hottest South Beach
style--with sand, palm trees, sailboards, boats, campfires, a lighthouse,
fireworks, and even an onstage swimming pool where superstars Jennifer Lopez
and Pitbull took an unexpected dip. The most original and unconventional awards
show on Spanish-language television presented awards in 27 unique categories
within five areas: Music, Movies, Novelas, Sports, and Pop Culture; the biggest
winner of the night was Prince Royce.
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull jumpstarted the "Premios
Juventud" beach bash performing a live medley of their blowout hits
"On the Floor," "Dance Again," "Live It Up," and
"Don't Stop the Party" in a truly unforgettable production featuring
46 dancers and aerial acrobats, drums, an impressive laser light show and
nonstop rhythm. After a grand opening featuring Lopez inside a bird cage and
Pitbull appearing on top of a silver jungle gym, the explosive duo had the
audience on its feet jumping and cheering with their electrifying dance moves.
This vibrant opening number brought down the house and set
the ultra-festive mood for the rest of the night, during which the lineup of
stellar performances ran the gamut from sensual bachatas to Regional Mexican,
salsa, electronic dance tunes, pop ballads and much more. Among the internationally
famous Latin music recording artists who performed live on the "Premios
Juventud" tonight were Chino y Nacho, DJ Chino featuring Fito Blanko and
Papayo, El Dasa, J Alvarez, J Balvin, Larry Hernandez, Leslie Grace, Lucero,
Marc Anthony, Marconi with Eiza Gonzalez, N'Klabe, Thalia, and Victor Manuelle
ft. Gocho. Additionally, the show featured an inspiring segment with
up-and-coming young artists Abraham Mateo, Becky G, and Kevin Ortiz, whose
impressive musical talent bodes future stardom.
In a "Premios Juventud" exclusive, six Latin music
stars performed the U.S.
television premieres of their newest singles. Ricky
Martin drove the crowd wild with his signature sexy moves in the worldwide
preview of his "Spanglish" version of "Come With Me" amid a
state-of-the-art lights show; Prince Royce wooed the audience with "Darte
un Beso" against a romantic Caribbean backdrop; Jencarlos Canela debuted
"I Love It" in a festive pool party setting; Maite Perroni surprised
viewers with the new bachata tune "Tu y Yo," giving an unexpected
twist to her pop career; Pee Wee debuted the romantic ballad "Duele
Decirte Adios"; and Yandel, part of the super popular reggaeton duo Wisin
y Yandel, made a rare appearance alone on "Premios Juventud" to close
the show with his new solo single, "Hable de Ti," in a sensational
number that began with him rappelling down to the stage from a giant
light-filled Y.
During the three-hour telecast, an impressive number of
celebrities from the world of Hispanic entertainment were on hand to present
the awards. Prince Royce topped the list of winners, getting five awards in
Music categories that range from Red Hot Artist and Catchiest Tune to My
Favorite Video. He was followed by the late "Queen of Banda," Jenni
Rivera, who received four awards, including My Regional Mexican Artist and My
Ringtone. Among other winners were Bruno Mars and Jesse & Joy, with two
statuettes each, plus Blanca Soto, Marconi, Mana, Shakira, Pitbull, and many
others in a diverse range of categories. All winners were chosen by fans who
voted online and on mobile via www.PremiosJuventud.com.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of
the "Premio Icono Mundial" (Icon Award) to Jennifer Lopez. The
special award pays tribute to outstanding artists of Hispanic descent who have
achieved global fame. This was only the second time that the award was given at
"Premios Juventud"; the previous recipient was Marc Anthony. Lopez
also took home a second award tonight for the Movies category, She Steals the
Show.
In addition, Mexican comedic actor Eugenio Derbez was
honored with the prestigious "Supernova Award" in recognition of his
distinguished and wide-reaching career. Past recipients of the
"Supernova" award include Fernando Colunga, Shakira, Mana, Ricardo
Arjona, Chayanne, and Antonio Banderas.
For the first time ever this year, "Premios
Juventud" fans voted for the 2013 Summer Song online and via Twitter,
which will become the official theme of the Univision Network's summer on-air
promotions. The winner was "I Love It" by Jencarlos Canela.
Prior to the awards ceremony, Univision celebrities
Alejandra Espinoza, Rodner Figueroa and Carlos Calderon, joined by pop
sensation and star of the hit telenovela "Amores Verdaderos," Eiza
Gonzalez, covered the arrival of all the celebrity guests as they made their
way towards the "Premios Juventud" show. This year's pre-show theme
featured a festive strip of arcades, shops and restaurants along a colorful
beach boardwalk where Angel & Khris performed their contagious summer feel
single "My Corazon."
Fans were able to join in on the beach fun via unique social
media integrations. Alejandra Espinoza, also the official "Premios
Juventud" social media host, brought fans closer to the action direct from
the Social Media Lounge and "Premios Juventud" beach style social
media wall featuring the evening's trending artist and hottest topics. Additionally
and unique to Univision, viewers chose their Best Dressed celebrities of the
evening via a REAL-TIME Twitter vote.
Additional social plays included a Twitter Mirror, where
winners posed for a special picture on the boardwalk and backstage that they
then tweeted out to fans.
Chino y Nacho served as the evening's celebrity
insider team photodocumenting exclusive content on Instagram and Facebook. Fan
Twitter questions were also asked throughout the evening to celebrities on the
carpet and shoutouts were broadcast on-screen in support of fan favorites. This
year, fans were able to Tweet "Truth or Dares" for their favorite
celebrities and select Q&As were presented during rehearsals this week.
Mashable's Associate Entertainment Editor Brian Hernandez was
on-site equipped with the newest reporting technologies providing fans at home
with unprecedented access to the show and their favorite celebrities.
